Microsoft 365 is the enhanced version of the original Office 365, which is Microsoft’s first flag ship into the cloud. This platform offers versatility, mobility, and security all under one platform. No longer limited to the bounds of conventional “on-premise” equipment, Microsoft 365 has given businesses the ability to take mail and manage it 'on-the- go'.
Microsoft 365 leverages all the capabilities of Exchange Server and combines them with Microsoft’s Exchange online (cloud version). These two platforms have long since integrated, but now they integrate on a far more deeper level with this cloud solution.
We all know the Microsoft suite of Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Teams, and Access. These products can be bought separately or as a suite, then used on a “per computer” basis. Once installed, the company owns the software and will get regular updates from Microsoft with their monthly patch release for security vulnerabilities and updates to new features. A bundle of this license for one machine would typically cost about $350 making the price tag hefty if the organization is very large in size. That is where organizations would utilize their “bulk discount” from Microsoft. This was the way how life was prior to Microsoft 365.
Microsoft 365 now comes with the full Microsoft Office suite, but at a fraction of the cost. Not only does it come at a fraction of the cost, but it can be installed on up to 5 computers per user. This means that one install of the product can be used up to 5 times on 5 different computers simultaneously without running into licensing issues.
Once installed, Microsoft 365 will automatically accept updates once allowed by the owner and new versions that come out will automatically be installed with no additional charge. As with most Microsoft products, there are levels that are available with the product depending on the license purchased.
